Team Focus: Amgen Team

Leave it to our Presenting Sponsor to turn up the heat on team recruitment and team fundraising.  They topped off 2010 with over $20,000 raised on behalf of the Arthritis Foundation, Great West Region.

They are off to a great start this year, so we had a couple questions for their team captain, Melinda Jodry:

  1. How do you recruit employees in a fun, festive and no-pressure way?
I raise awareness of the opportunity to join the team with some fun signs, a couple of contests, and “thermometers” showing the number of people registered and fundraising progress toward the goal.  A graphic showing the fundraising tick upward shows people how their contribution keeps us moving toward the goal.
  2. It looks like your team members are fundraising and/or donating – what does it take to motivate them?  People find that the event is a great way to be a part of Amgen’s mission to serve patients.
  3. How do you promote team camaraderie? I use the paper bells from the AF as a team “sign” in the office.  When someone registers for the team I send them a paper bell with their name on it.  They  post the bell on the door of their workspace at Amgen.  As these bells show up all over the office during the registration period, I wonder if people say to themselves, “Gee, I need a bell, too.”  When people register their family or a big group, they post all the bells on their workspace.   Some people put up as many as 10 bells.
  4. Do you do anything special for your team members?  Amgen team members receive a unique and colorful hat or scarf to help them stay warm and, with so many people in Westlake Center, and spot each other at the Jingle Bell Run/Walk. Many of our dedicated employees come back year after year and  have acquired red and white striped hat, scarf, and socks, with red gloves – an outfit that can’t be missed.

  1. That sounds great! My employer can't do the same because we work with a virtual office setup. No need for matching stripey hat, scarf and socks!
